A few plain notes on keeping your chimney, burner and home safe.

Why get your chimney swept?

Sweeping removes soot and deposits from the flue, which helps reduce the risk of chimney fires and flue problems, and keeps your burner running efficiently and cost effectively.

How often should it be swept?

It depends on the appliance, the fuel you burn and how often you use it, but annual sweeping is generally recommended. If you use your fire heavily or burn wood, more frequent sweeping may be sensible.

Carbon monoxide

Solid fuel appliances can produce carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. A working carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as the appliance is essential. Test it regularly.

General safety

• Burn the correct, dry fuel for your appliance.
• Have the chimney swept regularly.
• Keep the appliance maintained.
• Fit and test carbon monoxide alarms.
• Don't ignore problems like smoke coming back into the room.
• Use a competent, HETAS registered professional.
